One Great Hour of Sharing

This Sunday, a special collection will be made for One Great Hour of Sharing:

"One Great Hour of Sharing is an offering that makes the love of Christ real for individuals and communities around the world who suffer the effects of disaster, conflict, or severe economic hardship, and for those who serve them through gifts of money and time. Today, projects are underway in more than 100 countries, including the United States and Canada. In the 1990s, receipts have exceeded $20 million annually. While specific allocations differ in each denomination, all use their One Great Hour of Sharing funds to make possible disaster relief, refugee assistance, development aid and more."

Sunday School class update

The adult Sunday School class met for the first time yesterday with a full house!  Thirteen congregation members joined for discussion.  They selected the text "Life Lessons with Max Lucado-A Book of Psalms" by Max Lucado to study as a group.  It was decided that leadership of the class would be on a rotating basis, with each member taking their turn to lead... a style that has worked well in the past.  Here is the book description from Amazon.com:

"The Psalms form a praisebook for God's people, a collection of hymns and petitions to lead us in worship. The variety found in the Psalms reminds us that worship is personal and, that while each worships differently, each should worship. With scripture reading, inspirational readings, questions to answer, space for journaling, and a prayer, it's like studying the Bible with Max Lucado."

If you missed the first class but still want to join, you are of course still welcome!  How exciting to have a new small group in the church!

2012 Annual Meeting

The 2012 Annual Meeting at Shelby UCC was held on Sunday, January 29.  As always, the congregation met after the worship service and spent the majority of the fellowship time eating a delicious pot luck lunch.  The acutal meeting was quick and productive:  the budget for 2012 was passed, new officers for the next year (or two, depending of the position) were elected, a small amendment was made to our Constitution (changing the number of people required to fill each board from four "persons" to "three or four people".  We're all looking forward to great happenings in 2012!
